The BC Siberian Husky Club has been very successful in rehoming Siberians and Siberian mixes to new homes. Over 60 lucky dogs and owners have found each other through our efforts.

Shown here are some of the most recent adoptees and their stories.

Akira

Is a B/W female, with beautiful blue eyes, she is just under 1 year old. Just finished her first season and ready to be spayed. Akira was given up for being destructive in the garden and making too much mess with her hair. She is a typical Siberian and wants someone to spend time with her. Akira is a soft and loving little girl who needs some TLC and training.

Akira update.

Akira is now the queen of all she surveys. Living in a wonderful home with an entire family of loving people to care for her. Akira goes jogging every day with a family member and has been to obedience classes and did very well. Akira now has the best life a husky can have: secutity, activities, love from a wonderful family, and lots to eat.

Alpha

Is a four year old spayed female mal/siberian cross in B.C.Alpha's was rescued from euthanasia by a good Samaritanwho has provided her with temporary housing. The GoodSam reports that Alpha is very sweet and easy to care for, loves hugs & kisses! She has been crate trained, and should make someone a very nice companion.

Alpha's original owner had surrendered her for euthanasiabecause she would no longer get along with her female littermate. Although Alpha has played without incident with dogs at an off leash dog park, we believe that Alpha would best be adopted into a home with no female dogs. She has "flirted" with the male Siberians at her foster home when placed side by side in chain link runs. Alpha has also been teamed up with a young puppy and has shown only the desire to play, play, play. We have no idea if she has had any exposure to cats.

Alpha/Kaya update

Hi Joanne,

Just thought you may want to know how Kaya is doing. She has adapted very well to her new surroundings. She was very curious at first about everything from TV to pictures on the wall to the beeping of the dishwasher. She spent her first night in the crate and since then we have not bothered to crate her, but keep the crate open and available just in case she wants to go in. She sleeps in our room with us and has tried to get up on the bed a few times, but after getting her down a couple of times, she decided that she would pull her blanket out of the crate and sleep on that in the bedroom. We have been able to leave her have the run of the house while we are at work with no problems. She's amazing!!

We took her to an off lease area on Sunday and there had to be at least 50 other dogs. At first we were a bit nervous but a fellow from SASHRA (southern Alberta Siberian rescue) came over with 4 of his boys and she was in her glory. They played and ran for about 10 minutes and then we carried on separately for our walk. We spent about 1 hour there and she ran and played with many dogs of all shapes and sizes with no incidence of aggression. She was very well behaved and came when called. She has the run of the house during the day and we've never had a mess or a problem. She listens very well and is very, very smart and learns very quickly. She is responding to her new name very nicely and enjoys her snuggles & tummy rubs in the evenings.

Thanks so much,

Jim & Sandy.

Eric

Had been a lonely dog for some time. His owner felt he was not getting enough attention and surrendered him to the local Shelter. They called rescue for assistance and after being nutered he was placed in a great situation that offers him the companionship of lots of his own kind, several people who care for him and a life full of fun activities. Eric is a happy boy now!

Harley

Harley is currently staying at the Abbotsford SPCA. The reason for her surrender by her current owner was allergies. Harley is not yet spayed but that will be done before she goes to her new home. From the intake forms it looks like she is house trained, has been with children. She is partially obedience trained, does sit, stay, heel, and come. Harley has spent most of her time outdoors and that is what she prefers. She will chew if left alone in the house.

Harley update

Harley now has a great home! She has been reunited with a litter sister that came from the same local breeding kennel. BCSHC Rescue is always ready to help abandoned siberians.

Kira: I am trying to find a good home for my (11) month old Female Siberian. She has all her current shots, is spayed, & micro-chipped. She is very beautiful & has stunning blue eyes. When we adopted her at 9 months old, she was not house trained at all. She is slowly picking up the rules of the house but still has a ways to go. She is a typical Siberian that is full of energy that loves to dig, run, chew, & play. She is great with kids & other dogs. Both my wife & I work all day & unfortunelty she (Kira) has to stay in a Kennel all day until we get home. We have (2) young children & another (4) year old female Husky to take care of & we are finding it very difficult to give Kira the time she deserves. We want to find her a good home where she can get the attention & training that she requires.

Update from Kira's New owner:

Hello everyone!

Well, first night went about as I had expected. I took Kira for a little walk for bout an hour at the ferry terminal and she met quite a few other dogs and just wanted to play. Besides yanking me on the leash, she was fine. She spent the first hour sniffing every little corner of the house and I took her for a little walk as soon as we got home. She woke me up around 6:30 am and I took her out right away to do her thing. After that, she wouldn’t let me get back to bed! We went out for at least 3 or 4 more times I think she quickly learned that was how to get me to take her outside! I put her in the crate finally at around 8 so I could try to get another hr of sleep, but at 8:30, she was just whining, chewing and clawing at the crate, so I took her out. Mom n Dad took her for a good long walk around Thetis Lake and she went for a swim with some other dogs (dad got a little wet since the leash was kind of short!). During this time, I was able to get another hour of sleep. She played and sniffed the other dogs and was nice! She came back and I thought she’d be ready for a little nap, but as I write this e-mail on my laptop, she’s behind me on the loveseat clawing my back and nipping at my ears! She just wants to play some more! I’m just off to go shopping shortly for a new lead, dog food and whatever else I can think of for her.

Bill

Molson and Dawson

Molson & Dawson are five years old brothers from the Langley area. They come from a loving home and were puppy raised together but need more room than the current owners can provide. They prefer colder, dry weather and enjoy each others' company. We would prefer they not be separated and go to the same home if possible. As with most Huskies they are energetic but well behaved and settle down on walks quickly.

Comments from the new owner:

"Dawson & Molson arrived here about 1:30. Good looking boys! I am not sure how much actual interaction they have had - can you fill me in? The owners said that they took them out for walks sometimes - but didn't do it often because they were so hard to control, and there is no doubt that Molson is a very dominant boy. Dawson just could not care less for people... either his old ones or me. Nothing that can't be worked on that's for sure. They reassured me the boys got on well with other dogs.. they are both still intact - so we will certainly be looking at neutering them next spring.

Molson an Dawson are now working in harness side by side and getting a great deal of enjoyment from their new circumstances.

Morgaine

was in a foster home due to a break in her front leg.Morgaine is highly active, curious and engaging! She is an affectionate puppy who loves to be touched. She easily adjusted herself to my household. Morgaine has learned to live comfortably with 3 adult dogs and 2 senior cats. The older dogs have been instrumental in teaching Morgaine the importance of respecting another's space. Morgaine is an intelligent dog who is highly food motivated and she has quickly learned "sit", "down", and "leave it" Morgaine's ideal family would be a family that would give her clear positive guide lines and consistency. She would like a very active family that could keep her stimulated physically and mentally. A family that likes camping, hiking or jogging would be ideal. Because Morgaine is a "whole lot of dog", she would definitely benefit from puppy classes. I can see her becoming a good obedience dog.

1/12/06: Morgaine was adopted!! YAY! Her new family came back from holidays, filled out the paperwork and took her home. As soon as she got there, she marked each of the rooms and pooped on the living room floor, then air snapped at each person in the family. Amazingly enough, they thought she was just great and are looking forward to the 'challenges of learning more about her personality' as their last dog was 'too easy'. Gotta love husky people!!

Percy

Percy is not yet neutered but is looking forward to having his new family arrange it for him. He has had little training but he is a friendly youngster looking for love. He has been on a short leash his whole life and has basicly lived in his own excrement. Percy is a dancer and will dance circles around you. He calmed down each time I visited him in the village pound and was gettingbetter on a leash. He definitely is a sled dog as he can pull!!

Comments from his new owner:

Well Percy has been a good boy all day..

He spent the bulk of the afternoon pacing the new kennel, wrestling with his new playmates - five 10 month old females, their mother and one of my easy going 5 year old neutered boys. He and Chance seem to have the most fun wrestling - Chance is a big stocky boy - very like his papa Woody. Lani & Zena - two of the pups are in love with him and won't leave him alone. Lani has stolen Percy's jolly ball and he seems to be fine with that - and I am sure when things cool down even more temperature wise tonight they will all be playing tag with it. what a great toy!

Percy has been bouncing around just like the pups he is in with. Has been great fun to watch. Tom went out to clip everyone up this morning and so we could get chores started and by the time I got out there with the food - he was still playing with Percy and the pups... his words were - if that dog can run and pull as well as he jumps off the ground then we have a really good dog there! I laughed! Percy seemed to love the wrestling and playing that Tom was doing - and as much as it frustrates me - because I want to play too- but don't until chores are done - I am also very glad that Tom spends as much time with each group of dogs as he does.. everybody gets a cuddle - right up off the ground into his arms, a really good long tummy rub and then a good wrestle on the ground - I have already told him that I will shoot him if he teaches Percy to jump into his arms like he has done with Inuk! He is just too big a dog to do that with... Tom just smiled at me

Riggs

He had been picked up by the local Animal Control numerous times and placed in homes four times. Nothing was working for this beautiful young dog. The last time he was placed he left after five days and was found walking down the road by an RCMP officer who opened his car door and said "jump in" Riggs did just that and for the last time was returned to the shelter. The Shelter then called Rescue to se if we could help, and of course we did. Riggs came to BCSHC husky camp and became one of the kids. He is a happy well adjusted boy who was only looking for someone to understand him; he is an excellent dog and a pleasure to have around. It had almost been decided that Riggs would stay permently when a few months later the most perfect home became available for him. Riggs is now enjoying all the things that huskies like best!

Riggs update

Hi Joanne,
Riggs sure was looking to come into the house last night!
Now I know why with his bed routine, you've spoiled him!
Though we have been known to do the same.

He sure is a wonderful dog!
This morning he was prancing around and speaking well of his new home.
There seems to be no problem either with him getting along with our Chai, the Shitsu.

He ate very well when they were all fed at six last night.
Each gets their own space to eat, but they are free to roam whenever.
I'll gradually change him over to our brand of chicken and rice feed as I haven't
seen the kind you had sent along with him.
Thanks again ~ Gerry

Tundra

Is a very sweet, good looking young boy. He is currently residing at the Parkville/Qualicum SPCAand is looking for a forever home with a fenced yard and folks who understand the mind of thr northern dog and can show him leadership and guidance. At this point friends and club members got together and paid for Tundra's neutering. He was taken into a foster situation to give us time to find his new home.

Tundra update

Hi Everyone!
It's just me, Tundra, calling in to say thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. I have been with Margo since May , but now I'll be living in my new home in Nanaimo. I really like my new humans (and they know about us northerners) and my new Sibe lady friend 'Knikka' .
Cheers, Tundra

We are Viggo’s second family. We have had Viggo for two years and purchased him from a couple in Aldergrove who had obtained him from a breeder as a puppy. They had him for approximately one year and found that they could not look after him because they were about to have new child and both worked shifts. They named Viggo after the Lord of the Rings actor, Viggo Mortensen.

We have two children 13 and 14 who have been able to walk him regularly and every Sunday we spend two or three hours walking the Hayward Lake trail. Despite this regular exercise routine and the presence of another dog - female Malamute – Viggo has been determined to escape as often as he can. . We have now reached our final point with ourselves and our neighbors and feel it is necessary to find him a new home.

On the positive side, Viggo is an affectionate, gentle dog who has an excellent disposition. He is great with children and other dogs. He has never shown any sign of aggression towards people or other dogs. Long on affection and short on obedience or compliance is probably typical of his breed and Viggo, in this regard, is no exception. He has been a joy and a memorable member of our family in the short time we have had him but our own domestic situation seems too confining for his needs. We are looking for a situation where he can be socially interactive with people and other dogs that are a part of an ongoing daily routine. The standard domestic environment of working adults and school aged children does not seem to meet his needs. A family or single person in a woodland setting or a working or casual dog team environment may be more appropriate.

Snowy

Hi I am a Malmute/Husky combination and have the best traits of both breeds. I am two years old and not spayed yet. My shots are all up to date and I am very healthy. My original owners took me to a boarding kennel and did not reclaim me. I have been here for over six months waiting for them to return. Looks like that is not going to happen, so the folks at the kennel
are letting me look for a new forever home. I get along very well with other dogs, but would
not like to be around cats or other small animals. A fenced yard is a must, as well as a lot of TLC and some training. I would love to be your special pet and would reward you with lots of kisses. Thank you for being interested in me.

Snowy was adopted before she made it onto the available page. Here is an update from her new owners:

Just to let you know we made it home safely, and that this was certainly a match meant to be.

Snowy very quickly learned to heel and not pull, she was incredible in the car, mostly just watching the scenery go by.
She met new people, and other dogs on the way home, and was very social. It was a bit funny when I got her home though, she was terrified of the stairs!, not having seen them before in her life I would assume. , It didn't take much though before she was using them like a Pro. she took to

everyone here immediately, including the Springer puppy Abby, and as I thought, two of the Cats have already met her, and she showed no inclination to even chase them.

She is even showing signs of being territorial, she checked out any vehicle driving though our cul de sac, and barked at our teenaged daughter who was walking through the backyard (in the dark), she stopped once she knew who it was.
We are just totally in love with her, I'll send some pics later.

Thank you again,
Mark and Audrey

Derek

My wife and I are Canadians, living in Taiwan, and just last week, we rescued a 2 year old Husky, abanondoned on the streets of Taipei County, Taiwan. We took him to the vet to get him checked over, and see if we could track down an owner, but hewas clearly abandoned. His body had been shaved to aleviate the heat; the temperature here is around 28-38 degrees Celcius in the summer time. He is in the initial stages of heartworm infection; his other organs are healthy, so with an 8 week treatment program. He also has numerous skin infections, so we had him properly shaved, and he is presently being treated for his skin
condition. Upon further examination, we discovered he'd been trained to sit, shake a paw, and lay down. He does whine if he's hungry or in a confined space, but aside from marking territory, he's housebroken. He's friendly, not at all agressive, but as we already have adopted another stray dog, we don't have enough space to keep him. We're tried to have him adopted locally, but we feel it's cruel to keep him in this environment, and ideally would like to find him a home in Canada. Presently, we're paying to have him kept in a kennel at the vet, but we can only do that for so long.
Please can you help!!

06/13/2006 - A busy week since we just got back from
Canada. Another thank you to all the people who have kindly made donations to Dereck. You're helping us keep him in a safe place where he gets well looked
after and treated. He seems to be responding well to the heart worm treatement, and he was ecstatic to see us when we visited him after our return. The vets inform us he's doing very well, although since the heartworm treatment began, they've been reluctant to give him medication for his skin infections, they're worried about him getting blood clots. So his fur has almost grown back, but you can clearly see the fungal bloom on the back of his neck. The vets have informed us that he won't be allowed into Canada until the fungal infection
is cured, as it is contagious. So it looks like once we beat the heart worm, we'll have to work on the fungus. But otherwise, he's much healthier and happier and getting back to a healthy weight.

Update on Dereck's condition!

We just received the wonderful news that he is at last free of heart worm! However, we've also come to the realization that we've fallen in love with Dereck, and as a result, we just can't bear to part with him. So, after some discussion we've found him a home close by, with my wife's family. They've been aware of Dereck's plight, and offered him a place to stay. It wasn't a viable option before, but he seems to be the perfect addition to the family. He's been in their home for a week and he's instantly housebroken and knows the routine. It's a great place, they have time to spend with him and take him for walks on the mountain trails and to a large park nearby every day. I had no idea that Husky's were such wonderful dogs! My wife's family has fallen in love with him and they dote on him like a baby. They've even been calling the vet every ten minutes if he sneezes or sleeps for too long.

I wanted to thank you so much for all your help and support. We didn't think we'd be able to take care of Dereck on our own, we thought the best thing for him was to go to Canada, but we've become so protective of him, we just realized that nobody is going to take better care of him than we will, and while we have the resources, we just didn't have the space to keep him. But now that problem has been solved and he is a part of our family now. Thank you so much, I can't tell you how much you helped us with what felt at first like an impossible, lonely task. It's wonderful to know there's so many kind hearted caring people in the world!

Please keep in touch and I'll keep you updated on Dereck!
All our best wishes,

Somerled and Rita McDonald

Niko:

Niko is a healthy and happy neutered male and up-to date on all shots. He is about 4 years old and is 45 lbs, he has loads of energy and is very chatty, especially
when he wants something! He loves other dogs and is currently residing with 4 other dogs with his foster family. He should NOT be placed with small children or cats and needs a 6 foot fence. Niko will protect his food bowl and so to avoid conflict should be fed separate from other dogs. Niko can shake both paws and sits very pretty on command. He is very soft, loves to cuddle and likes to sleep on the floor in the bedroom at night on his bed. Niko would like someone ready and able to give him the attention he deserves (someone who works at home?) as he gets bored and can be destructive when left alone or if he is trying to get to his people. A home with at least one other dog would be a nice change for him. He is very calm and loves to sleep, especially in the sun - he will stay there all day when
in good company! He also loves the snow and loves to hike. Niko has tons of personality and with the right home and some obedience training (to which he responds easily and quickly) he will be a forever dog for a lucky family!!

August 2006

Niko been adopted to a wonderful husky home with another husky
to play with. Earlier this year, his new family lost their old friend
and first rescue dog, Torak. Niko was able to help fill the void left
with Torak's passing and is much loved and understood.
